First, in January 1542, the Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, trying to reach the colony of Asunción, in Paraguay, led an expedition that crossed the region of Foz do Iguaçu.

Until then, the Caingangue and Tupi-Guarani Indians inhabited this region. It was in the middle of this adventure that he came across the falls, which were later called Iguaçu Falls.

Since then, this destination has not stopped being visited.

The Iguaçu National Park, which is home to the Garganta do Diabo is certainly, one of the best structured tourist spots in Brazil, with a multitude of impressive attractions.

The Legend of Iguazu Falls

To the waterfalls of Iguaçu they have a unique and inexplicable energy, which undeniably move even the most skeptical. Above all, the legends and mysteries that surround the place are not from today, but cultural legends from past centuries of the indigenous tribes that lived there.

Look how curious: the Indians who inhabited the region believed in a huge god shaped like a snake, called Mboi.

In this tribe, the chief's daughter, who was called Naipi, was considered the most beautiful of all women and her beauty was capable of stopping the waters of the river. Naipi was offered to Mboi. For this reason, the girl dedicated her life to the cults of the deity, Mboi.

During a tribe celebration, a young warrior named Tarobá met Naipi and fell in love with the chief's daughter. The two, blinded by love, fled in a canoe across the waters of the river.

Upon realizing this, Mboi became furious and opened a huge crack in the river that emerged from the depths of the earth, which would have given rise to the waterfalls.

Tarobá and Naipi, surrounded by the furious waters, collapsed into this abyss for all eternity.

According to legend, Naipi would have been transformed into the central rock of the Falls. And Tarobá, in a palm tree that is at the tip of an abyss right in the river gorge.

The Devil's Throat takes this name, as it would be the exact place where the god Mboi, moved by revenge, opened the crater, which remains there until today in possession of his fangs.

Facts about Iguazu Falls

In addition to the impressive legend of ancient peoples, the Iguaçu Falls, with a Brazilian vision in Foz, are a set of waterfalls that are formed by the narrowing of the Iguaçu River.

The name “Iguaçu” derives from the Tupi-Guarani language and means “big water”. More than apt name, isn't it?

From a scientific point of view, the formation of this natural wonder of the world took place with the movement and breakage of tectonic plates approximately, about 130 million years ago.

With the rupture of the plates, a gigantic amount of lava was emerged by the volcanoes to the surface. The result of this volcanism covers a surface of 1,200,000 km², reaching a thickness of 1,500 meters.

There were more than 50 layers of lava erupting under the Earth's surface.

As they flowed, they formed several vertical columns as if they were boards. The Falls, finally, formed in three steps of lava flows.
